For all the times that people on the streets of New York City have stared in shock and horror at my daughter with Down syndrome (yes, it happens more than you would think), I am grateful for today.
A drunk St. Patrick’s Day Parade visitor, a young gentleman of twenty or less, peeled away from his college pals and ran over to me. Pointing at Magdalena in her stroller, he said with delight, “You made a cutie! You made such a cutie!!” He then looked me in the eye and gave me two thumbs-up.
I nearly started crying. Thank God and St. Patrick for happy drunks.
